My wife and I were walking with friends who had recently sold their business and were discussing their situation. This is their second marriage. They each came into this long-term marriage with children, although one set of kids was essentially raised by both of them. The business sale generated several million dollars; enough money to insure that they would live more than comfortably without ever invading the principal.

They always helped the set of children that they jointly raised, but mostly through bringing them on trips, providing business guidance and, at times, loans, and helping out in emergencies. The children have never had much money, but they would be described by the parents as very happy. ...
