18Moving From iMovie to iDVD

My father had amassed a pretty large videotape collection over several years. So you can imagine he did a fair bit of eye-rolling as DVD discs quickly gained in popularity, because that meant he needed to build a DVD collection, too.

DVD has several key advantages over VHS. The discs are smaller than videotapes, their image and sound quality are much better, and discs don’t degrade over time (at least, not remotely as fast as tape, a fact you’re no doubt aware of if you have an aging wedding or graduation video). And DVDs are interactive: jump to your favorite scene in a movie; store several movies on one disc that can be accessed without fast-forwarding.

And yet, in Apple’s eyes the DVD is already on its way out, ...
