Corvus is a small, mid-southerly constellation, ranking 70th in size among the 88 constellations. It covers 184 square degrees of sky, or about 0.5%. Because it lies in a star-poor region south and east of Virgo, Corvus is more prominent than its size and the magnitude of its brightest stars might lead you to expect. On a dark night, the distinctive trapezoid shape formed by its four brightest stars—all third magnitude—stands out clearly to the WSW (west-southwest) of first-magnitude Spica in adjacent Virgo.
