Possible independence for Scotland and a British exit from the EU are slowly beginning to cause concerns inside Washington about the future support from a country that has been a crucial ally.

From Washington’s point of view, an independent Scotland could damage the credibility of the UK in international institutions and in broader diplomatic debates.

“The fear is that the UK is gradually losing whatever geopolitical pull it once had,” says Charles Kupchan, a Clinton administration official now at Georgetown University, about the Scotland referendum. “If you add in a potential exit from the EU, then the potential diminution of Britain’s place in the world starts to loom large.”
