Fine-Tuning the Mechanics

Now that you’ve spent some time on the big-picture aspects of writing, it’s time to get small again, and take a look at those tiny tools of writing called punctuation marks.

Some little things have big jobs, and that’s certainly true of the punctuation marks that end sentences: periods, question marks, and exclamation marks. I’ll also discuss some punctuation marks that are often misused: commas, colons, and semicolons.

Don’t feel bad if you’ve misused a comma or two in your day; commas have so many jobs that it’s no wonder people get confused. On the other hand, semicolons don’t have many jobs at all—just two—so you have no excuse not to learn those jobs by heart. I’ll cover less frustrating punctuation marks ...
