Using the Parts of Speech to Build Sentences

Now it’s time to take the building blocks of writing and combine them into larger forms that you can use when making sentences.

In these chapters, you’ll get a closer look at the most important words of all: nouns and verbs. You’ll learn how nouns form the subject and object of a sentence, naming all the people, places, things, and conditions that exist. You’ll learn how verbs explain what those nouns do and are. Since a subject and verb are needed to make a grammatical sentence—or an independent clause—it’s important to understand nouns and verbs thoroughly.
