COMING BACK FROM THE TWO-HOUR DRIVE from Rochester after my annual mammogram and still feeling the pain of the needle biopsy that to my good fortune turned out benign—only a five-year reprieve as luck would have it—I attended the patent award dinner, a major corporate event at Corning, during which Rob Stanley, Corning’s CTO, approached me with a simple question: “Would you be interested in an international assignment?” Without hesitation my answer was a resounding “Absolutely!” He stopped short of a discussion and moved on to the next person.
