9.2. WebSphere Application Server security architecture

WebSphere Application Server v5.0 is a J2EE 1.3 compliant Java application server; it uses a declarative security model in which an application expresses security constraints in a form that is external to the application. This external form of the constraint allows the application to be independent of the chosen security mechanism.
