J2EE applications and modules include an XML-based deployment descriptor that specifies various J2EE artifacts (e.g., EJB definitions, security role definitions, ejb-refs, resource-refs, etc.) pertaining to the application or the modules. These artifacts define various unresolved references that are used by the application logic. The J2EE specification requires that these artifacts be mapped to J2EE platform-specific (in this case, WebSphere-specific) information during deployment of J2EE applications on such platforms.
