WebSphere Architecture Terms

The definition of a server, node, and cell are the same in WAS-ND as in WAS, but before discussing the additional terms that apply to WAS-ND, let's briefly review the definitions for these three constructs.

Server

As noted before, an application server is a Java Virtual Machine that hosts user-written J2EE applications.

Node

A node is generally a single physical computer system on which an application server resides. A node is usually a single machine, but some hardware can use partitions or regions that mimic multiple machines.
