Chapter 3. Connectivity 139
3.7.1 Connectivity
Following is a discussion of the connectivity options in the OSA-Express environment.
z900 OSA-Express features
z900 supports the following OSA-Express features:
򐂰 z900 OSA-Express GbE LX (feature code 2364)
򐂰 z900 OSA-Express GbE SX (feature code 2365)
򐂰 z900 OSA-Express FENET (feature code 2366)
򐂰 z900 OSA-Express 155 ATM SM (feature code 2362)
򐂰 z900 OSA-Express 155 ATM MM (feature code 2363)
A z900 server can support a maximum of 12 OSA-Express features (24 ports).
z900 OSA-Express GbE LX feature
The z900 OSA-Express GbE LX feature (feature code 2364) occupies one slot in the z900
zSeries I/O cage. The feature has two independent ports with one CHPID associated with
each port. The z900 OSA-Express GbE LX feature supports the 1000BASE-LX standard
transmission scheme.
Each port supports connection to a 1 Gbps Ethernet LAN via 9 micron single-mode fiber optic
cable terminated with an SC Duplex connector.
Multimode(62.5 or 50 micron) fiber cable may be used with the z900 OSA-Express GbE LX
feature. The use of these multimode cable types requires a mode conditioning patch (MCP)
cable to be used at each end of the fiber link. Use of the single-mode to multimode MCP
cables reduces the supported optical distance of the link to a maximum end-to-end distance
of 550 meters.
The z900 OSA-Express GbE LX feature only supports QDIO mode and TCP/IP. The
Enterprise Extender (EE) function of Communications Server for z/OS and OS/390 allows
you to run SNA applications and data on IP networks and IP-attached clients. See Enterprise
Extender on page 137.
The z900 OSA-Express GbE LX feature is supported by the z900 Channel CHPID
Assignment facility described previously.
z900 OSA-Express GbE SX feature
The z900 OSA-Express GbE SX feature (feature code 2365) occupies one slot in the z900
zSeries I/O cage. The feature has two independent ports with one CHPID associated with
each port. The z900 OSA-Express GbE SX feature supports the 1000BASE-SX standard
transmission scheme.
Each port supports connection to a 1 Gbps Ethernet LAN via 62.5 micron or 50 micron
multimode fiber optic cable terminated with an SC Duplex connector.
Note: IBM Statement of Direction - announced April 2002
zSeries (z900 and z800) servers will be the last family of servers to provide OSA-Express
ATM features.
