15.2. Mail daemons

The following is a description of the mail daemons:

Sendmail daemonA message routing program routes messages to their destinations. The mail system’s message routing program is the sendmail command, which is part of the Base Operating System (BOS) and is installed with BOS. The sendmail command is a daemon that uses information in the /etc/sendmail.cf file, the /etc/aliases file, and the /etc/sendmail.nl file to perform the necessary routing.
Syslogd daemonThe sendmail command logs mail system activity through the syslogd daemon. The syslogd daemon must be configured and running for logging to occur. Refer to section 15.4, “Mail logs” on page 420 for more information about the syslogd daemon.
