IN 1995 REED TOOK A FIRST, tentative step into cyberspace. That was the same year that Jeff Bezos launched Amazon in America; by 2010 Amazon had captured 50 per cent of the bookselling market. The arrival of Google was still five years away and not even Bill Gates of Microsoft or Steve Jobs of Apple had yet realised just how all-pervading the internet would become.

Even so, the dotcom fever that would dominate the next five years had begun to take hold, with new companies starting up every week. Chaos threatened, but in 1994 Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web, was persuaded to form the World Wide Web Consortium, which promoted common standards for the internet.
