I WAS PONDERING WHAT TO DO with the Reed Foundation’s new-found wealth when I attended a Helpage International brainstorming weekend. I remember sitting in the sun daydreaming when suddenly the thought came to me that if there was an international charity especially for old people, there should also be one for women in developing countries who need help.

Reed’s early success had been built on women, who made up most of our workforce and were promoted to a senior level; so I am a fan of women in general although I would not call myself a feminist. I have too many old-fashioned habits like opening doors for women and walking on the outside of the pavement for that.
