IN 1987 JAMES WAS 24, working for Help the Aged in Pakistan, and waiting to start an MBA course at Harvard Business School. If any of my children were going to join me at Reed it was clear that James would be the one. Richard had no business ambitions and Alex, still a teenager, looked likely to pursue a more artistic career. People say that James is most like me in character. My flirtation with death had forced me to think about the succession, but I was in no hurry to push him into the business.
