IN 1986 I BEGAN TO FEEL UNWELL. There was no sudden weight loss or any other specific symptom, but I gradually became aware that I simply did not feel as I should. I had a couple of medicals – in fact, I started to look for excuses to have medicals – and each time the doctors said I was fine.
