WE HAD TEN REED OFFICES by the time James was born, and I moved the head office from Earls Court to Bond Street. At around this time, we took on an attractive young lady called Mary Newham, who started our nursing recruitment division. Mary had been teaching primary school children but she had taken a year off and was coming to the end of it. One day she spotted an advertisement in the local paper for someone to work from our Earls Court office and help find clients for a new branch in Slough. She came to see me and I was immediately impressed. She was not only good-looking and stylish, but she also had an engaging personality that I knew would go down well with clients and candidates.
