SELECTED BYMAURO ZENNAROLETTERS IN POMPEIIDESIGNERUNKNOWN
I saw for the first time this picture in Edward M. Catich’s The Origin of the Serif, and I immediately fell in love with it. The letters of the word LVCRETI-SATRI are beautiful—elegant and regular narrow roman capitals, surely painted by an anonymous scriptor (professional writer). I went to look for them at Pompeii archaeological site, but I was bitterly disappointed: That wall didn’t exist anymore. I photographed what remains today: the two last red letters RI under a protective glass.
During World War II, the Anglo-American carpet bombings destroyed part of Pompeii. A kind archaeologist of the Pompeii Archaelogical Supervision Board advised me to search in Rome’s American Academy ...
