It’s hard to separate my lust for the contents of this box from the design of it. This film was one of Kodak’s greatest achievements. Kodachrome was the motion picture stock of choice when I began making films. It was very expensive to buy and to process, but the colors and contrast it delivered were so stunning, it rivaled Technicolor. This box contained a 100-foot (30.5m) spool of the film, about two and a half minutes. It was in a plain shiny metal can, sealed with tape. It was heavy when you picked it up. Having it in your hand was like being passed the Olympic torch. It was your moment. You were holding a box of raw cinema, and anything was possible.
