Austria debuted the first government-sanctioned postcard in the autumn of 1869. Dubbed the CorrespondenzKarte, the rudimentary paper novelty sold over nine million units the first year. Soon after, sales avalanched into numbers far greater.
In 1890, government relinquished control over the lucrative card-stock creation, granting publishing licenses to private industries. Unhampered, the postcard began to flourish artistically. Application of a resplendent printing technique born from lithography, known as chromolithography, evolved it much further.
