I grew up in Ulm, the little city in the South of Germany that used to be the home of the hfg ulm, an influential design school internationally known as the Ulm School of Design. After World War II, with the help of the United States, it was founded by Inge Scholl together with her husband, Otl Aicher, and Max Bill, amongst others. Opened in 1953, it was seen as the beginning of a new era for Germany and its cultural and political future, where rational thought and science would be the basis of the design education. The school had to close a mere fifteen years later, in 1968. I wouldn’t be born for another four years.
