It rarely happens that you have to descend deep into the ancient world of myths in order to understand how a graphic motif came about. In the case of my favorite poster, which promotes Olivetti’s Valentine portable typewriter, journeying into the past is a trip worthwhile. Indeed, Milton Glaser, who created the poster in 1969, conceals the mythological context of the subject from us by only showing the right-hand edge—or about a quarter of the whole composition. The panorama Glaser cites here (The Death of Procris) was originally painted in 1495 by Renaissance artist Piero di Cosimo and now hangs in London’s National Gallery.
