5.1   INTRODUCTION

Due to its attractive bioactive properties and chemical similarity to hard tissues including bone and tooth structures, either hydroxyapatites (HAs) alone or HA-based biocomposites have been coated on orthopedic prostheses and dental implants. Critical factors for long-term stability of fixation of these prostheses include biocompatibility, material selection, implant design, and surface modification and texturing.
