Numerical Simulation of Hydraulic Fracturing Propagation

Abstract

An introduction of stratigraphic and geological structure modeling and development of hydraulic fracturing simulators is presented in this chapter. Next, two-dimensional hydraulic fracturing models including the Perkins and Kern (PKN), Khristianovic–Geertsma de Klerk (KGD), and penny-shaped models are discussed. The discussions are then extended to numerical simulation of fluid flow in hydraulic fractures and solid and fluid interactions. Next, pseudo–three-dimensional (pseudo-3D) and three-dimensional hydraulic fracturing models are explained.
