Chapter Six

Proppant Characteristics and Application Design

Abstract

Application of different proppant sizes and types in hydraulic fracturing is investigated. Next, the importance of mechanical properties of different proppants on efficiency of hydraulic fracturing is presented. This chapter also reviews recent publications on numerical simulation of proppant transport and distribution in hydraulic fracturing. At the end of this chapter, proppant design and optimization are discussed, where the hydrocarbon flow in hydraulic fracture is coupled with reservoir dynamics. The simulation results show that there exists a combination of different proppant sizes and volumes that results in a maximum productivity index in an unconventional reservoir. Finally, ...
