Dealing with organized labor strikes fear into the heart of many an HR professional, but it need not be a scary undertaking. It should be noted that parts of this chapter apply only to firms in “union” states and not necessarily to those in “right to work” states. Union states are those in which union membership is mandatory for certain jobs. There are also 22 “right-to-work” states in the United States where, in accordance with the Taft-Hartley Act, workers are not required to join a union as a condition of employment.
