Client-side storage allows websites to store and retrieve information on your computer, using a controlled API secured by the web browser.
For many years now, websites’ only option for client-side storage was the HTTP cookie. The poor cookie, despite its flaws, has been used and abused since its introduction in 1994. When used properly, a cookie is a very useful tool to facilitate online authentication, shopping, and advertising. When used improperly, such as not including a server-side IP comparison, an expiry date, and any domain or path restrictions, a cookie can be a useful tool for a watchful Big Brother.
