Add Special Characters to Your Page

XHTML supports a set of character entities, which are codes that represent special characters that will be interpreted by the browser to display non-standard characters. The syntax to create any of these entities is to use an ampersand, followed by the code for the character, followed by a semicolon.

These entities fall into three main categories. The first contains a single entity,  , which represents a non-breaking space. As browsers will ignore consecutive whitespace characters, this entity lets you force additional space as needed.
