Troubleshooting and Maintenance Plans

Troubleshooting home lighting systems requires some basic knowledge about the home wiring layout and some experience installing and maintaining electrical wiring systems. You should not troubleshoot any electrical problem without taking the following safety steps:

  • Always turn off the circuit breakers or remove the fuse that controls power to the circuit on which you are working.
  • Play it safe and get an inexpensive voltage tester that lets you know whether it's okay to work on a wall outlet or light fixture. Place the tester on the wiring or in the slots in the AC outlet.
