This section describes the standards organizations and related standards documents that you will need to know concerning the home lighting and management industry.

Wiring Types and the National Electrical Code

The National Electrical Code sets standards for lighting circuits and home wiring types. A set of standard terms used to identify different wire types are listed here. Electrical contractors use these designations when selecting the correct wire type for each environment. They are

  • T— Thermoplastic (60° C) for dry locations

  • TW— Moisture-resistant thermoplastic for wet locations

  • THHN— Heat-resistant thermoplastic (90° C) for dry locations

  • THWN— Heat-resistant (75° C) for dry and wet locations

  • W— Moisture-resistant
