INTRODUCTION

Why did we write this book? Collectively, we have amassed over a hundred years of observing, cajoling, admiring, encouraging, and challenging the human resources (HR) profession. In that time, we have shared the frustrations of HR leaders when opportunities have not been fully recognized or leveraged, and we have shared delight when HR professionals and leaders tell stories of how the potential for delivering real value was recognized and captured. In good times and bad, we have concluded that HR issues lie at the heart of sustainable organizational success. Research confirms what we intuitively know: aligned, innovative, and integrated HR practices make a dramatic difference in individual and organizational performance.
