Step 3: Learn Business Unit Goals

Tactical alignment evolves from congruence between business unit goals and measures and HPI goals and measures. First, identify the strategic business units. The business units may or may not be apparent from the organizational chart. A strategic business unit conducts activities across areas that add value to the business such as the following:

  • innovation

  • operations

  • marketing

  • distribution

  • selling

  • service

A strategic business unit has its own well-defined business strategy, and, typically, has its own customers and seeks to increase its customer base.
