12.4. HP-UX Tuneable Parameters and Java

The default tuneable-parameters values for HP-UX are usually not sufficient to run server-side Java applications efficiently. Java applications make extensive use of kernel threads, socket connections, and file descriptors, and can use a large amount of heap memory per JVM instance. HP provides a tool called Java out-of-box (a swinstall package), which will modify system tuneables and scripts so that various HP-UX tuneables are set large enough for most server-side Java applications. There should be at least 512 MB of memory on a system where this script is run. The script will not lower the value of any tuneable parameter already set on the system where it is run.
