The three ways of tuning network bottlenecks include hardware solutions, configuration solutions, and application solutions.

10.9.1. Hardware Solutions

There are a variety of hardware solutions, all of which can be thought of as “spending money” solutions. Here are a few common approaches:

  • Add more network adapters and rebalance the network load, say with Autoport Aggregation.

  • Use faster network adapters (e.g., Gigabit Ethernet versus Fast Ethernet).

  • Use switches instead of hubs.

  • Use higher-performing switches.

  • Use network adapters with checksum offloading to perform the checksum operation in hardware versus software.
