9.11. Tuning Disk Bottlenecks

The three ways of tuning disk bottlenecks include hardware solutions, configuration solutions, and application solutions.

9.11.1. Hardware Solutions

There are a variety of hardware solutions, all of which can be thought of as “spending money” solutions. Here are a few common approaches:

  • Add disks drives and rebalance the I/O load.

  • Add disk adapters and rebalance the I/O load.

  • Use faster disks.

  • Use faster disk links (e.g., Fibre Channel versus F/W SCSI).

  • Use more device controllers, if applicable.

  • Switch from disk arrays to stand-alone disks or from stand-alone disks to disk arrays.

  • Use mirroring (stand-alone or arrays) to improve read performance. This may, of course, hurt write performance due to the extra writes involved ...
