7.9. Tuning CPU Bottlenecks

There are several ways to tune a CPU bottleneck:

  • Hardware solutions

  • Software solutions

  • Application optimization

  • Adjusting CPU-related operating system tuneable parameters

7.9.1. Hardware Solutions

The simplest solution may be to move to a faster CPU. This solution will help most but not all applications with CPU bottlenecks. Another strategy is to move work to other systems or create an nPartition by creating a client/server environment or by moving monolithic applications.

If the bottleneck is caused by increasing workload, the following strategies may help:

  • Upgrade to a CPU with a larger cache

  • Upgrade to a CPU with a larger TLB

  • Upgrade to an SMP system

  • Add a CPU in an SMP system

  • Remove CPUs to use fewer processors

  • Use
