2.1. Workload Estimation

Workload estimation begins when a new application is being designed, or when an existing application is to be ported to a new system platform. Examples of data required for workload estimation are:

  • Number of users

  • Types of transactions

  • Mix of transactions

  • Transaction rate

  • Amount of data

  • Throughput (amount of work to be accomplished in a given time interval)

  • Response time (acceptable average amount of time per transaction)

When a similar workload does not exist, workload estimation involves guessing the values for the data listed above. Otherwise, the data should be estimated based on real values from a working application and system.
