A.5. Headings in the Summary Chart

The summary chart for each tool is organized as follows:

  • Tool Source. This lists the original author of the tool, such as System V Unix, BSD 4.X Unix, or Hewlett-Packard Company.

  • Documentation. Documentation for the tool may come in the form of a man page, manual, on-line help, and/or kernel source code. Some tools are much better documented than others. In a few cases, it is necessary to review the kernel source code in order to understand the intent of a particular metric. The value of the tool increases with the quality of the documentation. In other words, if you don't understand what the metric means, you can't use it to decide when and how to tune the system.
