It seems on the surface such a noble suggestion: treat people as you would want to be treated. And to be fair it’s pretty good advice.

Up to a point.

Treating people with the degree of respect and courtesy that we would appreciate does seem a fairly reasonable starting place when dealing with others.

But please don’t fall into the trap of thinking that what floats your boat also floats mine.

In fact, treating people as you want to be treated could have disastrous consequences and be the reason why you don’t succeed with people.
