Why do we remember certain things and not others?

I recall a recent survey of events both within and outside the UK that British people most remembered. The shocking events of September 11th 2001 and the untimely death of the Princess of Wales were very clearly the most remembered events. Depending on the age of those asked, the death of JFK in 1963 and England winning the World Cup in 1966 were also well remembered. Why? Because they are distinctly different, they are relevant and of high interest to a wide audience; and, of course, they are endlessly recalled in various ways in the media.
