About six or seven months after we set up Advertising Principles, I decided it would be a neat idea to provide free bacon sandwiches for all the staff on pay day. No money, just a bacon buttie. Only kidding. People were paid by bank transfer on the last Thursday of the month so there was no pay cheque or cash to count. And for no other reason than I thought it was a nice thing to do, I asked my PA to buy 27 bacon sandwiches, and we put a tannoy announcement out that at 10 a.m. on pay day there would be a free bacon sandwich for everyone. The gesture went down well.

After a couple of months my PA started getting a call or two on the day before pay day with requests: 'Can I have sausage and tomato and can David have his bacon well ...
