Acknowledgments

I am blessed by the many extraordinary people I met throughout my schooling and my career. I am especially grateful to Professor Richard Taub, then Department Head of Public Policy Studies during the time when I studied at the University of Chicago. With his encouragement, I took a graduate-level class in my second year of college. English was not my first language, but I volunteered to present my paper in a lecture hall full of graduate students. This experience tells me that the sky is the limit if I am willing to try my best.

I am also deeply thankful to Edward Lam, my supervisor at Morgan Stanley, who taught me the true meaning of hard work and how a foreigner could defy the glass ceiling and excel in one of the most competitive U.S. investment banks, then go on to become the CFO of an FT Global 500 company.

Susanna Hui, my supervisor and CFO of PCCW, was the one who encouraged me to take the CPA exam. This book would not exist without her. She has been an exemplary role model of how female finance professionals can balance family and work with grace.

I offer my thanks to the many people who have shared their expertise and experience to make this book a reality. My gratitude to Peter Milburn for discovering my website, Nick Melchior for recommending that I write this book, and the John Wiley & Sons editing team for their guidance and support; to Leslie-Anne Rogers for her expertise in the CPA exam qualification process; and to Yan, Edgar, Donna, Ying, Rania, ...
