In 1965, I entered the architecture program at Harvard Graduate School of Design (HGSD). The basic method of teaching design at HGSD, it turned out, was to assign students to design a certain type of building or space and then critique the designs. The critiques were very formal and were modeled after the process an architect might go through in trying to sell an idea to a potential client. The students presented their designs to a panel of faculty members and professional architects.
