The federal government is the largest employer of people with disabilities, and is currently working hard to increase its hiring of people with disabilities. The federal government currently employs about 125,000 people with disabilities and almost 20,000 people with severe disabilities. About 7 percent of feds have a disability.

Job applicants with disabilities may be hired for federal jobs through the same competitive procedures as nondisabled applicants. But disabled applicants may also be hired through special procedures that allow them to bypass job competitions. These procedures are called “noncompetitive Schedule A Appointments.”
