Tackling anxious thoughts

In this chapter we’re going to learn how to deal with one of the most important drivers of anxiety: our thoughts.

Did you know that the average person experiences more than 4,000 thoughts a day? 4,000! Most of them pop into – and out of – our minds without any conscious effort. They seem to appear from nowhere and usually within a few moments we’ve forgotten they were ever there.

The vast majority of our thoughts come and go and leave scarcely a trace. They aren’t important. And yet we don’t tend to see it like this. Instead, we attach huge significance to our thoughts. We assume they mean something. We believe that they tell us something useful about ourselves and the world around us.
