Why you really can overcome your anxiety

When we’re struggling with anxiety, we may feel as if things will never improve. We don’t know why we’re fearful in certain situations, and we may find it hard to remember a time when we weren’t plagued by anxiety.

So we assume, for example, that we’ll always be scared of heights; that we’ll never be confident about speaking in public; or that meeting new people will always be stressful for us. That’s just the way I am, we tell ourselves.

But it isn’t so. We aren’t doomed to be anxious all our life. We can change. We can learn to cope with the situations that worry us, and even to face them with confidence. In this chapter we’ll find out why.
