One of the most thorough manuals on the competencybased hiring process is Bradford Smart’s Topgrading (Penguin, 2005). Among many excellent points made in Smart’s book is this: It is a deadly career mistake to accept a job or promotion that you are not really qualified for, or don’t entirely want to do.
