The chief requirement for active listening is to have ‘room’ for others – if you are preoccupied with your own thoughts, ideas and views, you are not mentally ‘available’ to listen effectively. When listening, it is really helpful to try to understand the other person’s view, without superimposing your own views or judgements prematurely – a major block to active listening.
