CHAPTER 10Google+—The New Kid on the Block

LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter—they’re all social networking sites that have existed for less than a decade. Yet combined they have more than 1 billion users, and they’ve helped thousands of people land new jobs or work as independent contractors/freelancers. In this chapter we’ll take a look at the new “kid” on the social network scene—Google+.

As we write this, Google+, which launched on June 28, 2011, has been available for only four months. For all but one week of those four months it was available by invitation only. On September 20, 2011, Google opened Google+ to anyone over 18 who had a Google account. Once Google opened the floodgates, its user base grew by more than 1,200 percent in one week!
