Types of Questions to Use

Our suggestion for written and online surveys is to use primarily multiple-choice questions that require five or fewer alternative responses. This will allow relatively easy tabulation and compiling of responses.

A final essay question can be of assistance. It provides a method for participants to supply any additional information not covered by the survey's multiple-choice questions. Fill-in questions and ranking questions should be used when there is not an alternative multiple-choice or objective question.
